The house was built for entertaining by Hon. Henry William Wilson, 11th Lord Berners, a founding member and former president of the Royal Agricultural Society. Building commenced in the Georgian style in the late 1700s and was completed in 1843. It is positioned overlooking a deep valley with views over the old estate and beyond.
Guests are welcomed into the grand entrance hall, featuring twin fireplaces, contemporary artworks, original Berners family portraits, and an early Blüthner grand piano. This elegant space can be used for dinners, meeting rooms or a spontaneous dance floor.
Guest can enjoy the wonderfully proportioned formal rooms with lofty 18ft high ceilings, all with floor to ceiling windows to maximise light and the sweeping views over undulating hills. The walls are decorated with a combination of portraits and modern art and the interiors are the result of a five-year restoration project by Giles and Barbara, the current owners. Each room offers a sense of grandeur while remaining comfortable and homely.
The double drawing rooms, with two stunning marble fireplaces, offer breath taking views of the unspoilt countryside. Here, guests can relax in comfort, play games, enjoy pre-dinner cocktails, or simply sit with a good book.
The fully appointed family kitchen is for the sole use of guests and is perfect for enjoying a morning coffee while watching the sunrise.
